The BayPay Forum provides many opportunities to learn and network with other payment professionals. After Loyalty, Couponing and Mobility in January at Wilson Sonsini, Social Commerce in February at Intuit, Startup Funding in payment and commerce in March at Silicon Valley Bank and Mobile Payments in the San Francisco Bay Area at Orrick, we are now taking a look at Mobile Commerce in Los Angeles at City National Bank on May 28.

A few weeks ago, we were invited to present at the FS-ISAC (part of Homeland Security) on “Emerging Payments – Emerging Risks”. Everyone is talking about Mobile as the new era. While we agree, we wanted to show the phenomena and its impact with real data. We are all about innovation in payments and commerce so we took as an example Black Friday, which is the biggest retail day of the year in the US and compared traffic on mobile devices on that day.

The result? In 2010, internet traffic on mobile devices represented 6% of the overall traffic, in 2011, 14% and in 2012, a few months ago, 24%.

This demonstrates that more and more consumers are using their mobile devices to make decisions so going to the store is the last part of the transactions for many. At the last RAMP conference in Chicago, we had the opportunity to discuss with many retailers, small and large, and mobile devices are increasingly a critical part of the customer engagement process.

With this new way of shopping, payment has to be frictionless and part of this process. So in this new edition of the BayPay Forum events, we will look at how carrier billing solves the problems for many merchants in the digital world. We will discuss how we got where we are with NFC at the Point of Sales and how to succeed in cross border money transfer.

We had the choice between several locations in Los Angeles for this event but we selected City National Bank for several reasons. Russell Goldsmith, CNB's CEO is an entrepreneur like many of us. Banks are fighting fiercely for business and the 4 larger banks have a big advantage with their national networks. So, it will be interesting to have Russell as a speaker to share his vision and explain how a bank like CNB uses technology to stay competitive and even beat the big guys in certain markets.

This event will start with a networking breakfast so don’t forget your business cards.

Thank you to our host City National Bank for making this event possible.
