The trial tested interoperability of SIM-based NFC payment on the Samsung Galaxy S III for Italian users attending the London Olympics Games.

NFC Times Take:

The Visa Europe-driven project handed out the phones to executives of banks, mobile operators and merchants in Europe, and the payment scheme held interoperability trials in Italy and Poland, in addition to the main trial in the United Kingdom. The phones with the Telecom Italia-issued SIM cards did, in fact, work on Visa payWave terminals in London, according to one Telecom Italia manager, although he added that it was hard for users to find payWave terminals, despite the 140,000-plus terminal deployment.

* Trusted Service Manager: Defined loosely to include companies or other organizations securely distributing, provisioning and managing applications, generally over the air, on secure elements in NFC mobile phones; or licensing their platforms for this purpose.
