Coffee has been an integral part of our culture for some time now. It’s one of the first things we enjoy in the morning to wake us up and get the day started, and some people go as far as calling it a necessity. We even have a holiday for it: International Coffee Day, which we celebrate on Monday, September 29.

At PayPal, we work alongside numerous coffee shops around the nation, processing seamless transactions so you can get your coffee that much faster.

Today, we’ve released survey[i] results around preferences for coffee drinkers.  We asked over 1,000 men and women across the country how many cups of coffee they are consuming a day, how long they wait in line, how much they are paying, and how they are taking their delicious java and we found some interesting results.  For example, men are more likely to drink their coffee black, whereas women are 59% more likely to drink “fancier coffees” (e.g. lattes, cappuccinos or espressos). Me, personally, I prefer a double cappuccino.

I even had the luxury of seeing Michael Breach, renowned coffee artist, craft a stunning sketch in my  double cappuccino today, and we’re hoping to surprise you with some beautiful silhouettes too! Breach and other local coffee artisans are working with PayPal in some local coffee shops around New York City and San Francisco adding specialized coffee art to your day. If you don’t happen to see us, you can check out the art on our Instagram page, and feel free to share some of your own as well!

Check out some interesting facts we uncovered from the survey in the infographic below, including:

Guys Crave the Jolt: One-third of men drink 3 to 4 cups of coffee per day more than women. Women are More Patient: Women are more willing to wait in line than men for a cup of coffee – up to 16% longer. The Young Spend More and Like Their Coffee Cold: People ages 18 – 24, are willing to spend $3.00 for a standard cup of coffee and consume more iced coffee. Each Region Has its Own Coffee Preference The Northeast drinks their coffee with milk only The Midwest drinks their coffee black The South drinks their coffee with milk & sugar The West is more likely to get a little fancy and prefer lattes, cappuccinos or espressos

To be honest, what surprised us most is how long people are waiting for a cup of coffee. Avoid the line! Download the PayPal app on your phone, head down to your favorite local coffee shop and see just how quick and easy it is, so you have more time to enjoy the things you love, including coffee.

[i] The survey was conducted using the web-enabled KnowledgePanel®, a probability-based panel designed to be representative of the U.S. population. Interviews were conducted Aug 26-28 for the National sample of 1000 Adults 18+ and Aug 26-Sept 3 for the three individual city samples of 150 each in NY, SF and Austin. The margin of error for the main national sample is +/- 3 percentage points and higher for city subgroups.
