PayPal-Powered Business Spotlight: BuyCostumes.com

Chris Morse, Head of Merchant Communications, PayPal

hotdogdog.jpgCan you guess what this year’s most popular Halloween costumes are? According to online retailer BuyCostumes.com, Frozen’s Elsa and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Leonardo costumes are flying out the proverbial door. While Halloween is by far the scariest season for kids of all ages in the United States, it can be equally frightful for small business owners trying to keep up with consumer costume demand. Total Halloween spend is likely to reach $7.4 billion this year, which can prove daunting for retailers who are ill prepared to handle the invasion of zombie costume-seeking celebrants.

Eric Kirkhofer, CIO of BuyCostumes.com ships hundreds of thousands of costumes each September and October, and finds that leveraging PayPal’s technology has helped manage the boom of one of the fastest-growing consumer holidays in the last few years. “Costume season is not just Halloween,” says Eric. The company is working to take costume donning “from a moment to a movement” by catering to customers during other popular dress-up holidays, including Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s day and Easter.

Since bringing PayPal onboard four years ago, the company has seen checkout with PayPal grow by 30 percent* – in fact 20 percent of all online sales are completed using it and 25 percent of mobile sales are done with PayPal. Eric says that PayPal allows younger customers who might not have a credit card to take advantage of online shopping – by linking to their bank account with PayPal. And since the company is always looking for ways to access new customers, having options – like PayPal – is critical for both the Halloween season and beyond.

With the help of PayPal, BuyCostumes.com is “scaring up” success when it comes to their business!
