PayPal Blog Spotlight: Shane's Barbershop

shanesshop.jpgSan Mateo-based Travis Sweeney, an independent barber with Shane’s Barbershop and Shave Parlor, considers barbering an art and a haircut an opportunity to transform a customer’s appearance.

Being a barber, however, means that Travis, stylists and others in the industry are typically limited to cash-only payments because of high merchant credit card fees, machine equipment costs and security challenges associated with accepting credit cards. But with the help of PayPal, transitioning from a cash-only business to one that allows salon customers to pay however they want has never been simpler.

Travis turned to PayPal Here, PayPal’s mobile card reader and app to make it easier for him to grow his business by accepting other forms of payments. Traditionally, credit card processing fees are high, but using PayPal Here was a simple switch for Travis because of PayPal’s low rates – 2.7% per US swipe. Travis has stated that using PayPal Here has been one of the smartest business decisions he has made.

Recently Travis told us: “Often, clients would just bring in enough cash for their haircut, so it was challenging to upsell them a product or an add-on service. With PayPal being a trusted form of payment, customers are willing to use it anytime or anywhere, so it was relatively easy to get them to use it for their services. And I’ve also found when clients pay using PayPal they tend to tip higher than using cash.”

By using PayPal Here, Shane’s Barbershop and Shave Parlor is converting cuts to cash for his business.
