Music & Tech: At Outside Lands, Festivalgoers Have a Cashless Good Time

With more than 60,000 people attending the festival every day, it can sometimes feel overwhelming to walk around – especially if you’re trying to get from the Twin Peaks stage over to the Lands End stage! That was the crusade I took as I finished watching Capital Cities and tried to hastily get over to Death Cab for Cutie on Saturday.

For all the people watching, manic weather (it was freezing cold on Saturday but full of sunshine on both Friday and Sunday) and running around, I was happy to have a refuge at the PayPal tent. And you know what? I think everyone who spent their weekend at Outside Lands would agree with me. I heard “meet me at the PayPal tent” hundreds of times as I walked around the festival. The line for our face painters was never less than 30 people deep and our animated-gif photo booth took more photos than anyone will ever be able to count.

But beyond the hundreds of faces painted, prizes won and bracelets made, I think festival-goers most enjoyed the PayPal Convenience Store. Forgot your phone charger and your phone was about to die? No worries, you could buy a charger AND charge your phone at the tent. Beyond the “convenience” of the Convenience Store, my favorite part was that all the items were from local SF vendors. Rare Device, SwayChic and StoreEnvy were just some of the local merchants that were part of the store. Not only were you getting stylish items (those wood-framed sunglasses were the talk of the Polo Field), but you were supporting local small businesses, which I think makes the items you purchased that much more special….and things you’ll want to keep for years to come!
