IBM, Seat to partner on Watson-based urban mobility technology

Feb. 26, 2019

IBM has announced an agreement with Spanish automaker Seat to launch a "mobility advisor" that will use Watson-based artificial intelligence to help urban residents make transit decisions using a mobile app, according to a joint release from the companies.

The app will help urban travelers determine the most efficient way to reach their destination, whether by car, scooter, bike, public transit, or a combination of transportation modes.

"Traffic congestion and environmental challenges are putting huge pressure on cities to transform," Jordi Caus, head of new urban mobility concepts at Seat, said in the announcement. "At Seat we are leading the way by working with innovative cities and technology companies to make mobility easier and more efficient."

The app will use IBM Watson technology to incorporate information such as daily traffic updates, weather reports and events being held in the city with the user information such as appointments and historical data. The AI-based system may then recommend a particular mode of transportation, or even suggest ditching the ride altogether and walking to a particular destination.

The announcement comes a day after Seat, a unit of Volkswagen Group, launched its Minimo concept car,  an all-electric, zero-emissions quadricycle for city driving. The car can travel approximately 62 miles on a single charge.

The Minimo, which measures approximately 8 feet long by approximately 4 feet wide, is designed to navigate congested urban streets and tight parking spaces. The vehicle is equipped with Android Auto wireless technology, which allows the driver to focus on the road while completing other tasks and is also designed for ride sharing.

Visa, Planeta Informatica partner on contactless public transit in Rio

Feb. 25, 2019

Visa and Planeta Informatica have agreed to launch a platform called Visa Secure Access Module, which allows public transit systems to convert to contactless payments faster than previously possible. The companies are deploying the platform in April on the Metro Rio system in Rio de Janeiro, according to a company release.

The companies said the new technology allows conversion of public transit systems to contactless cards, wearables and other systems without the need to replace turnstile systems or make other costly repairs or changes to existing terminal hardware.

The Visa SAM system uses existing EMV technology to allow placement of the system into existing systems, saving significant time and money.

“This is a transformational development for public transit operators who want to improve their customer journeys and improve their operational costs by removing the need for tickets or topping up fare cards,” Nick Mackie, global head of urban mobility at Visa, said in the announcement.

Planeta Informatica CEO Artur Costa said the agreement combines 15 years of the company's experience working with public transit systems with the Visa Mass Transit Transaction framework released in 2017.

In a Visa study on mass transit and payment technologies, commuters said their use of mass transit would increase 27 percent if the payment method were changed.

Feb. 25, 2019

Nayax LLC, a provider of cashless payments and telemetry solutions, has become the first payments partner to integrate Visa sensory branding cues with its mobile payment application, Nayax announced in a press release. Monyx Wallet from Nayax enables digital payments at unattended automated machines.

The Visa sensory branding cues suite includes sound, animation and haptic cues that communicate to consumers that their payment — sometimes made in the absence of a traditional payment card —has been successfully authorized and that the transaction is complete.

Monyx Wallet users in 21 countries will be among the first to experience Visa's sensory branding suite when they buy a product or reload credit on the app using their Visa card. Nayax used the software development kit on the Visa Developer Platform to integrate the suite into the Monyx Wallet app.

"Nayax already enjoys a longtime working relationship with Visa, a world leader in digital payments, and is excited that Monyx Wallet is the first application to incorporate Visa's suite of sensory branding globally," Nayax CEO Carly Furman said in the press release. "Introducing these new digital representations of the Visa brand into our solutions will give Nayax consumers and operators the assurance they have come to expect when they use Visa."

Monyx Wallet is a digital payment application for unattended machines that seamlessly integrates with Nayax cashless payment devices and management systems. The application offers operators of unattended machines the opportunity to market their business and build customer loyalty with branding, virtual coupon cards, advertising and other consumer engagement campaigns.
