Netography, a company that specializes in network security solutions, emerged from stealth mode on Thursday with $2.6 million in seed funding from Andreessen Horowitz.
The firm was founded by Barrett Lyon, a DDoS mitigation pioneer who will serve as CEO, and Dan Murphy, who will be the company’s CTO. According to the company’s announcement, several other DDoS mitigation and network security “luminaries” are also on the Netography team.
Lyon is known for founding DDoS protection solutions provider Prolexic, which Akamai acquired in 2014 for $370 million. He also founded BitGravity, XDN and Defense.net, which have been acquired by Tata Communications, Fortinet, and F5 Networks, respectively.
Netography provides an autonomous network security platform that uses data from existing network devices, cloud processing, and some clever software and algorithms to detect and block threats.
Lyon told SecurityWeek that Netography provides a cloud-based solution that does not require any new hardware of special setups. “It’s a matter of creating an account with us and enabling a feature in existing hardware,” he explained.
According to Lyon, the platform ingests data that can be exported using mostly off-the-shelf hardware and services. Its goal is to complement existing security solutions and improve developer, security and network operations. “It’s the glue that’s been missing for all these decades,” he said.
The platform is expected to become generally available in the second quarter of 2019, but demos will be shown at the upcoming RSA Conference. As for pricing, Lyon told SecurityWeek it will be a monthly charge based on the number and size of devices.
