June 3, 2019

JCB International Co., a unit of Japanese charge card provider JCB Co., said it entered a strategic alliance with Arkea to allow the French banking group’s retail merchant partners to accept JCB cards on their payment terminals or e-commerce sites.

Arkea ATM’s will also be integrated into the JCB network for cash withdrawals under the agreement.

"This partnership with Arkea comes at a key juncture in JCB’s European strategy, which aims to strengthen its acceptance as close to consumers as possible," Tsuyoshi Notani, managing director of JCB International (Europe) Ltd. said in a company release. "JCB cardmembers coming to France will be able to benefit from convenient access to luxury, retail, hospitality, catering, gastronomy and cash withdrawals from ATMs."

Arkea will gradually roll out access to JCB cards through its portfolio of payment terminals. The banking group will also open access to payment pages to its partner financial institutions, including Credit Mutuel de Bretagne, Credit Mutuel de Sud Quest, Credit Mutuel Massif Central and Arkea Banque Entreprises et Institutionnels.

Arkea business customers will be able to accept JCB cards by the end of June. This includes all JCB Arkea Group ATMs, including those located in shopping malls and train stations.

JCB has more than 130 million cardmembers and is accepted by about 30 million merchant merchants worldwide.
