Mobile Payments via NFC will be a flop or will bounce back

NFC has been trying to get traction but has lost in many instances to power mobile payments, but in long term it could be adopted considering its other benefits of high security & differently due to its experience while shopping.

Retailers & small merchants are trying to implement NFC receivers at point-of-sale to connect with customer NFC cards & mobile devices. It is observed that rate at which consumers use mobile wallets to make payments & retailers have been low. But there are chances when NFC devices & cards penetrate more widely they would see its adoption go up in 3-5 years.

Considering Samsung Galasy S3, Note & other NFC devices penetrating & expectation of Apple launching its next device with NFC would enhance the use of mobile wallets. It would be good to see these companies come together to define standards for NFC.

With Apple getting approved for P2P patent it could happen that Apple might become payment network like VISA & MasterCard. It would be great to see how merchant led initiatives like MCX (Merchant Customer Exchange) play their role in implementing NFC hardware & software solutions at point-of-sale. This could be a game changer for NFC adoption in the market place.

Additionally, it would be great to see how airline industry helps in moving customer to paperless boarding pass where they would be using NFC technology to check-in at the terminal.

Even though NFC cannot be used for mobile payments but device makers are developing innovative solutions to integrate in other type of implementations connect it with home appliances.
