How to learn and profit from
payment developments in Europe.
The mini conference will look at some of
the recent developments in the European payments arena from pending interch
ange regulation, the proposed update of the Payment Services Directive whic
h would create a completely new type of payment institution, changes in the
underlying payment structure (SEPA formats) and the success of real-time A
CH payments in the UK that has given rise to innovative new payment methods
.
Keynote speaker will be Sven Gentner (see bio below), a repr
esentative of the EU, to remind the audience of the journey that Europe has
taken to get to the current place and what further developments are consid
ered desirable from the EU viewpoint. The Keynote will be followed by a mod
erated panel. On the panel, we have assembled industry experts from First D
ata Corp, Vocalink Ltd and Wells Fargo who will talk to their experiences w
ith the observed changes in Europe and where they see the opportunities and
challenges. We are looking for a lively debate with audience participation
.

Peter joined Edgar, Dunn & Company´s San Francisco from
MasterCard in London. Peter combines previous experience as a strategy con
sultant for Edgar, Dunn & Company in Europe with hands-on experience as a s
enior executive in the payment industry. He has managed the turnaround/rest
ructuring and sale of financial businesses as well as the design and implem
entation of country and regional strategies.
Before rejoining EDC in
San Francisco Peter worked for MasterCard International, London, as Head of
Strategy Europe where he was responsible for creating new business models
in response to regulatory challenges, building out a European strategy to
inform investment decisions, building competitor intelligence and for creat
ing/managing the European M&A target identification process. Before reloca
ting to London, he was Managing Director for MasterCard’s German market ope
rations.
Prior to this, Peter managed the credit card business of Roya
l Bank of Scotland in Germany and acquired deep retail banking experience a
s CEO/CFO of Santander Direkt Bank. Before entering the consumer space Pet
er worked as an international commercial and wholesale banker in London, Si
ngapore, Zurich and Paris in diverse roles from sales, product management,
commercial payments, treasury and trade finance.
Since October 2013, Sven Gentner is Counsellor in the Economic and
Financial Affairs Section of the Delegation of the European Union to the Un
ited States. He deals with EU-US regulatory issues and TTIP negotiations in
financial services as well as transatlantic issues in key EU internal mark
et policy fields like public procurement, services and IPR.
Sven join
ed the European Commission, the executive branch of the European Union, in
2004 and has served in various positions in its Brussels headquarters prior
to joining the Delegation in Washington. From 2004-2006 he was responsible
for the coordination of the EU-US Financial Markets Regulatory Dialogue, i
n 2006 he served as a member of the private office (cabinet) of Commissione
r Charlie McCreevy, from 2007-2011 he was executive assistant to the Direct
or General of Directorate General Internal Market and Services (with specia
l responsibility for financial services). In 2011 he was also seconded for
several months to the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa to advise the
AUC on the building of an African internal market. From 2012 to 2013 he wa
s head of unit for human resources and planning in DG Internal Market and S
ervices. Sven started his professional career with Allianz Insurance in Mu
nich where he was executive assistant to the CEO of the Bavarian subsidiary
of Allianz plc.
Sven holds masters degrees in economics from Johann Wolfga
ng Goethe University, Frankfurt, and the University of York, UK. He is marr
ied with two daughters and lives in Washington, DC.
Nicole Douglas is a senior vice president and international treasury ma nagement sales manager, based in San Francisco. She has been with Wells Far go since 2006 and leads the team that develops global cash management solut ions for companies throughout California. Nicole specializes in innovative banking strategies for technology sector companies especially in the global payments space. Prior to joining Wells Fargo, she worked as a management c onsultant focusing on developing business and technology strategies for mul ti-national companies. She has a BS in Finance and Management Information S ystems from Villanova University, Pennsylvania and graduated top of her cla ss from Gothenburg University in Sweden with a Masters in International Bus iness. A native Californian, Nicole has also lived in Pennsylvania, Washing ton D.C., Colorado and Sweden. She now lives in Marin County, Calif. with h er family.
Paul joined VocaLink as Managing Di
rector of Strategy & Business Development in June 2012. He is responsible f
or corporate strategy, product and marketing covering both the UK portfolio
incl. Faster Payments and Mobile, and VocaLink's international capabilitie
s centred around the Immediate Payments Service.
Paul's previous
role was at Barclays Bank, where he was Co-Head of Corporate Finance at Ba
rclaycard, responsible for M&A and Asset Disposals globally. Prior to this
Paul spent over 10 years at NatWest and then RBS, starting in Group Corpora
te Development and moving to the Internet banking and E-commerce team that
launched online banking and e-procurement solutions across the bank's core
brands. Paul then moved to the Global Transaction Services Division in RBS
where he became Head of Product and Marketing for WorldPay and then took re
sponsibility for M&A and developing major commercial relationships with For
tune 500 companies globally.
Outside of VocaLink, Paul is a Non
-Executive Director of Invitation Digital whose Vouchercloud business is on
e of the market leaders in UK m-commerce and is now majority owned by Vodaf
one.
