Between 2012 and 2017 the installed base of NFC-enabled handsets will increase at a compound annual growth rate of 65% to reach 2.1bn units, according to new research from Berg Insight. "The penetration rate for NFC across all handset segments will similarly increase to approximately 32% by 2017."

Taiwan-based Mitac International has unveiled two Android-based rugged mobile POS terminals. The 5-inch Dino and the 7-inch BumbleBee tablets offer IP54 water and dust resistance and support contact, contactless and NFC payments, barcode scanning, WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth 4.0.

Two new flagship Ultrabook PCs from Sony will include NFC. At 870g and 1.06kg respectively, the company says the Vaio Pro 11 and Vaio Pro 13 are the lightest touchscreen Ultrabooks in the world. The laptops will be available worldwide from 9 June from US$1,150 and US$1,250.


Retail technology provider IQmetrix has added support for Isis NFC payments to its RQ4 retail management system, which supports POS, CRM and inventory management functions as well as HR and accounting.
Worldwide mobile payment transaction values will reach US$235.4bn in 2013, a 44% increase on 2012's $163.1bn, according to a new forecast from Gartner — but NFC transactions will account for a smaller than expected proportion of that total and the overall market value has also been reduced.




Dell has announced a range of updates and upgrades to its consumer and commercial PC portfolio at Computex 2013, including the addition of NFC functionality to its XPS 12 convertible Ultrabook, Engadget reports.

The new service enables keys, certificates and NFC credentials to be stored securely in a remote location, rather than in the mobile device, is fully compatible with standard EMV contactless payments terminals and enables card issuers to deploy NFC solutions without the need to partner with mobile network operators or other third parties.

Attendees at Computex 2013, the technology trade show taking place in Taiwan this week, are able to use their NFC phones as ID badges. The event's official app includes support for in-app registration as well as for NFC badges.

Tinkoff Credit Systems is to launch an NFC mobile wallet service, developed by Russian mobile technology developer i-Free, that enables virtual MasterCard PayPass cards to be stored on embedded secure elements in Android NFC phones — avoiding the need to partner with a mobile network operator.

Apple has been granted a patent for System and method for simplified data transfer, which describes a system for simplifying the task of syncing devices and choosing which files to share between them. The "Grab & Go" patent describes in detail how NFC could be used to enable Apple devices to synchronised easily and was applied for in 2009.
Riders in 5,000 taxicabs in the U.S. would be able to tap on NFC tags on video advertising screens to download apps, brand information, coupons, maps, music and videos, according to technology suppliers that have equipped the taxis for potential advertising campaigns.

Mobile operator TIM Brasil and Banco Bradesco have disclosed plans for an NFC trial that they say would enable users to pay for purchases at contactless point-of-sale terminals by tapping their Motorola or LG Electronics NFC phones, with the funds deducted from their debit accounts.
Bradesco, one of Brazil’s largest banks, said in its announcement of the trial that it expects the bank and TIM to commercially launch NFC by the end of 2013.
An NFC payments pilot that will be conducted by Dutch banks ABN Amro, ING and Rabobank across the city of Leiden is set to start at the end of August or early in September, NFC World can confirm.
