UL has extended its testing services to include Application Activation User Interface (AAUI) and Proximity Payment System Environment (PPSE) testing, enabling payments technology providers to ensure their products adhere to EMVCo's Contactless Mobile Payment Product Type Approval requirements.

NFC technology provider C-Sam has announced a suite of NFC applets and test automation tools aimed at reducing the time needed for companies to develop, test and launch NFC products and services.

Three NFC phones have been added to the list of Google Wallet compatible devices; the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One on Sprint and the Samsung Galaxy Note II on both Sprint and US Cellular.
Telecom Italia and payments technology provider SIA are to pilot an NFC ticketing service with three transport operators in the Naples and Emilia-Romagna regions of Italy by the end of 2013.

Taxi ad network Creative Mobile Technologies has agreed a deal with NFC marketing specialist Blue Bite to use its mTag platform for advertising in 5,000 US cabs.

Riders in 5,000 taxicabs in the U.S. would be able to tap on NFC tags on video advertising screens to download apps, brand information, coupons, maps, music and videos, according to technology suppliers that have equipped the taxis for potential advertising campaigns.
The 5,000 taxis in which screens will get tags include 2,000 in New York City, 1,000 in Boston and 1,000 in Chicago, Mikhail Damiani, CEO of U.S.-based NFC marketing company Blue Bite, told NFC Times. The other 1,000 screens will be divided among Anaheim, Philadelphia, and San Francisco, he said.

Electronic components distributor Avnet is adding NFC and RFID readers, modules and tags made by Identive to its product range. "Having Identive on our line card enables us to offer customers more integrated module options, along with a vertically integrated transponder offering," says Avnet's Alex Iuorio.

Chip maker AMS has announced full availability of a new NFC chip which is designed to be integrated into a wide range of electronic devices to enable them to interact with NFC phones.

POS solution provider Leaf has unveiled a new version of its Android-based LeafPresenter device which includes support for NFC payments as well as EMV, gift cards, and 1D and 2D barcodes.
A total of 125m NFC phones were shipped in 2012, according to ABI Research, along with 147m NFC secure elements.
Canada’s largest bank and one of its three major mobile operators announced plans in May to commercially launch NFC payments by the end of the year, following a trial this summer. The Royal Bank of Canada, or RBC, and Bell Mobility plan to launch the SIM-based NFC payments service with debit and credit cards on up to five BlackBerry NFC phones and a range of Android devices from Samsung, Sony, HTC, LG Electronics and others. RBC said NFC will be the “first piece of a broad RBC mobile-commerce solution rolling out to clients this year,” including nonpayment services. The mobile-payments service will be part of the bank’s existing mobile-banking app and will work with the bank’s peer-to-peer payments service, which will enable RBC customers to send money to any individual or business in Canada.



Sony has unveiled a new NFC-enabled stereo Bluetooth headset designed to work with its Xperia smartphones. The wireless Sony SBH50 comes with a smart remote that includes an Oled screen to display text messages and caller information. Existing headphones can also be plugged into the SBH50 using a standard 3.5mm audio jack.
